Sue K - IBC Survivor

twinkling star image

My sister, Sue, was diagnosed with breast cancer in October, 1996 and with IBC in November, 1996, at age 48.

Sue K

diagnosed in 10/96 ductal BC

11/96 IBC (peau d'orange appeared just before '2nd opinion' appointment)

11/96 Modified radical mastectomy (Yes - she had MRM 1st - we later realized this is NOT typical IBC protocol! However, it obviously did not hurt her outcome!)

12/96 1st infusion Adriamycin

total 4 x Adriamycin - good response

3/97 High-dose chemo in Sacramento, California; 21 days in hospital; not fun at all!!

5/97 35 doses of radiation

No evidence of disease ever since!!! (written in January, 2001)

It took a year to be back to 'herself' energy-wise. At first, she had to 'crawl on her hands and knees' upstairs just to take a nap :-(

Now (Jan '01) and since mid '98... she's been her 'old' self:(tee hee! She's 52!) working full time; in several community service clubs; does Hospice work; sub-contracted building and decorating a beautiful new home.

She did have 2 'mets scares' in '98. Went thru batteries of tests which showed nothing. Both times... it was 'unremitting' pain in a bone or specific area of her body. Now, she's learned to realize she's getting older (along with all of us!) - and that does often bring aches and pains with it!

Although the HDC (high dose chemo) is often disparaged on the IBC List and elsewhere... our family gives it great credit with getting in there and doing the job she needed. Hey! She's alive and happy! What more could we ask!!

Feel free to contact Sue or me at any time. We'd love to help if we can.

Love,

Nancy Becker, CARDHU2@aol.com
loving sister of Sue
